“Slavic Readings” is an international scientific conference organized by the faculty of Humanities at Daugavpils University. It has been held since 1996. The conference takes place every year in May. At the conference scientists from different countries share the outcomes of their research and participate in discussions on various topics: the issues of development of the Russian language and its learning and teaching, Russian literature and culture within the context of other Slavic cultures and the European culture in general.
Every year the conference is becoming more recognized internationally. 52 scientists from Europe (Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Russia, Poland, Belarus, Ukraine, France, Italy, the UK, and Belgium) and the USA took part in “Slavic Readings” that were held on May 12-14, 2016.

The conference welcomes presentations of research done on the urgent issues of Russian and Slavic studies, and functioning of the Russian language, literature and culture in a foreign language environment. Within the framework of the conference the work in the following sections will be organized:
- Contemporary issues of Russian and Slavic studies (a theoretical aspect).
- Russian language, literature and culture in a foreign language environment (a pragmatic aspect).
The evening “New Russian Poetry in the 21st Century” with poets from Moscow, Riga and Daugavpils will be organized on the sidelines of the conference.
The conference material will be published in the collection “Slavic Readings”.
The pragmatic aspect related to the study of peculiarities of functioning of the Russian language, literature and culture in a foreign language environment, as well as the methods of teaching of these subjects in Russia, the EU states and the USA has been discussed alongside the theoretical issues at the conference for a few years already.
The Department of Russian and Slavic Studies of the University of Daugavpils is the lead organizer of “Slavic Readings”. The conference receives support from Daugavpils City Council, Culture Capital Foundation of Latvia, the project “Learn Russian in the European Union” (SIA LatInSoft).
The working languages of the conference are Russian, English and Latvian. The conference materials are published in the collections of scientific articles “Slavic Readings” which are distributed to scientific libraries in the EU and CIS states.
